Dental Crowns
A dental crown is a cemented restoration applied to a dental implant or over a natural tooth to restore its functionality, aesthetics, and correct the bite alignment.
Dental crowns are the suitable solution when a patient opts for a dental implant or has experienced severe tooth decay that has destroyed more than 50% of a tooth’s surface. Dental crowns can also be used for aesthetic purposes, in cases when a tooth does not meet the patient’s expectations, either naturally or due to trauma from an accident.
Types of dental crowns
There are several types of dental crowns, including:
- zirconium crowns, which are aesthetic, durable, and are typically used for posterior teeth. Zirconium is a biocompatible material.
- all-ceramic crowns, used for front teeth due to their natural appearance and aesthetics, closely resembling natural teeth.
How are dental crowns fitted?
The procedure of installing a dental crown is not complicated, it is free of significant risks, and involves the following steps:
- Firstly, the tooth that will receive the crown is subjected to a root canal treatment to prevent possible discomfort during the procedure.
- An impression of the natural tooth is taken, and sent to the laboratory for the fabrication of the dental crown. Each dental crown is perfectly customized according to the aesthetics corresponding to the patient’s desires and needs. Ultimately, after the dental crown arrives from the laboratory, where it was crafted, it is cemented onto the natural tooth. In the case of a dental implant, the crown is screwed onto it.
Advantages of dental crowns
Dental crowns have multiple advantages, including:
- restoring the desired aesthetics of your natural tooth
- guaranteeing functionality, allowing you to eat without complications
- providing necessary protection to the tooth, preventing damage for up to 20 years
Of course, for a dental crown to last as long as possible, considerations such as proper dental hygiene, including correct brushing at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, and avoiding as much as possible the consumption of hard foods that may wear down crowns over time, should be taken into account.
